The Healing Sound of Silence

Those of us who grew up with addiction, abuse, or other forms of trauma in our childhood homes had to learn to adapt to the chaos.

Over time, chaos begins to feel normal, or at least, comfortable. And we organize our lives accordingly.

Some of us might find ourselves leading very busy lives. We over-schedule and have very little downtime. Running ourselves to the point of exhaustion just feels right.

For others, it's not about busy-ness, but we live with constant sound. The TV, radio, or music provides a consistent soundtrack for our lives.

Either way, the point is to distract ourselves enough to crowd out the uncomfortable thoughts or emotional pain that we are still trying to manage. One of the signs that you are truly begining to heal is that you begin to crave silence. You are no longer trying to outrun yourself, or your past. You are ready to slow down a bit, to unwind.

Cultivating, and enjoying silence, is one of the most healing practices you can embrace. For more on this topic, see the April 25, 2026 episode of our podcast.
